CENTERVILLE CEMETERY, also known as Brown's Canon Cemetery, is south of the Town of Nathrop,
just off the Colorado Highway 285, on County Road 263. (Section 9, T51N, R8E, N. M. P. M.) This cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the county. It has over 350 marked graves. The actual number of interments is unknown. Several old tombstones are broken or are unreadable. There are many unmarked graves. Due to the harsh elements, most of the metal funeral home markers have lost the paper that would identify the interment.

Fred BERTSCHY, donated the land for the cemetery, since it was the only ground in Lake County (now Chaffee County) where graves could be dug without difficulty. Mr. BERTSCHY was a constable during the Lake County War years, and many casualties are said to be buried here.

The first victim of the Wars was George HARRINGTON, who had a marker inscribed: "Sacred to The Memory of George HARRINGTON, Was Murdered July 17, 1874, Aged 35 Years." The white soft stone marker is now deteriorated beyond recognition. (1993)

The first marked burial in this cemetery is that of a child, William H. SPRAGUE in 1864. The next marked burial is that of Willie B. COON, d. 24 Jun 1869. The cemetery is still being used by family members or by special permission.

There are no other records in existence for this cemetery. Arno HERZOG mapped the Centerville cemetery in 1990 for the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. The gravesite numbers and the sources of information follow the names and dates if known.

Additional information on most interments can be found in WHERE THE BODIES ARE by June Shaputis.
